I know, I know. It took me long enough to get this palette. Ever since Urban Decay’s NAKED palette hype, I’ve never believed that any other palettes can get as ‘naked’ as that. Boy, was I wrong. When I first got into makeup, I was immediately introduced and bombarded by the NAKED palette. That used to be my definition of the perfect basic palette. Hence, the reason why I never looked elsewhere.
I believe the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette only launched after I moved back to Jakarta from Seattle. That’s another reason why I didn’t get a chance to try any new make up – first reason being it’s way too overpriced here and I dislike joining preorders from third party resellers on Instagram, second being I was on a no-makeup-buy for a damn long time. Finally, I said goodbye to my IDR 815.000 and bought the palette in Sephora Indonesia. Yes we do have Sephora here, but no, it’s not complete.
Upon opening the outer box, I was greeted by a standard sized aluminum palette shaped as a … you guessed it, a chocolate bar. It has a glossy finish and seems to be durable. Too Faced, most of the time, is very innovative with their packaging, combining the feel of cute, classy and durability all in one. I am impressed by most of their products’ packaging that I already owned. It seemed like they put a lot of thought into it as they have card inserts showing how to apply the eyeshadows. The palette itself is quite heavy, making it quite bulky for travel.
I know for a fact that their first batch of the Chocolate Bar palette is bulkier than the one I own, and they do not have the shade names inside the palette, next to the shadow. I’m glad mine’s the latest improvised version because having the shade names on it really helps!
Here comes the hard part. Many people have different opinions on how a great eyeshadow formula should be. But here’s what I think. I’ve always stand on my belief that Too Faced does a superb job on satin finish eyeshadows – typically for an all-over lid color, in the inner corner of your eyes and under the brow (though I don’t typically recommend a color with sheen under the brows as it just highlights the excess skin you’ve got there).
Shades like Haute Chocolate, Hazelnut, Crème Brulee, Milk Chocolate and Champagne Truffle from the Chocolate Bar palette is simply excellent. They are buttery, pigmented and doesn’t take that much effort to swatch. Bendability of the eyeshadows are also something to note of in Too Faced shadows.
However, some of their matte shades I’m not fans of.
For instance, Semi Sweet and Triple Fudge to apply super patchy when I first swatched it. I’ve got to repeatedly rub the palette for the color apply evenly on my arms. It do still have a good color payoff but just patchy.
Some colors required more than one swipe for the colors to appear. However, this is not an entirely bad thing. Sometimes I love it when shadows aren’t too pigmented, so that it will allow beginners to go pick some more products to apply on their lids again to build the color up slowly.
Shadows like Grilled Ganache, Black Forest Fudge and Cherry Cordial, in my opinion, have big chunks of glitter which may cause a fall out, so one needs to be careful in applying the eyeshadow if it’s after their foundation.
I honestly love the mix of colors, from brown-ish mauvey shades to a pop of color like Candied Violet. A lot of people have categorized this as a warm eyeshadow palette but I have to disagree. I think it has a couple of cool toned shades as well, Amaretto is one.
Here are the swatches of the eyeshadows on my arms. All shadows are applied on my bare skin without primer.
Glided Ganache – White Chocolate – Milk Chocolate – Black Forest Truffle – Triple Fudge – Salted Caramel – Marzipan
Semi Sweet *I skipped this accidentally, I’m Sorry!* – Strawberry Bon Bon – Candied Violet – Amaretto – Hazelnut – Creme Brulee – Haute Chocolate – Cherry Cordial – Champagne Truffle
I think this is a great beginner palette and I think I will always recommend a Too Faced eyeshadow palette no matter what. I’ve owned a couple and love each and every one of them. Too Faced is often never disappointing with the products they roll out.
You can create tons of eye looks just solely from this palette and is really pretty on every skintone. Oh, did I mention the palette smells like chocolate? It’s one of the pointers that everyone never fail to mention in their reviews but I don’t think it’s worth buying a palette just because of the smell. I’m not entirely a fan of products with a scent, but everyone else seem to love it.
So if you are on the fence of getting a new neutral palette, go for this one. It’s on the top of my recommended palettes for a day-to-day look to night look.
